Bob Flatley told us that the library now subscribes to Web of Science database which allows researchers to determine which articles are the most significant in a given field based on how often it has been cited. Unfortunately for us, it predominately documents science articles. Bob will put me in contact with the salesperson from Thomson Reuters (who will be exhibiting at ALA) to see what the timeline is for developing the same tool for the field of education. I was especially interested because Duane Crider and I are looking to do some research about online courses and need to cite an authoritative article in the field.
The other highlight of the meeting was to inform the group that we received a check for $200+ from Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD). Publishers send us books throughout the year. Twice a semester our students, alumni, teachers, and librarians come to KU to hear about books from the previous semester and select books for the next semester. Each person (we typically have 100 people attend) selects four books and submits a short review for the compiled booklist. In addition to being published by our department, the reviews are sent to CLCD for publication in the national database. Because of our submissions, the library receives the database at no charge and we receive periodic checks. It is very good timing. The money will be used to buy the latest award-winning books for the collection. All of the award winners will be announced in Denver on Monday (Caldecott, Newbery, etc.).
Direct flight to Denver – smooth flight – landed at 8:30 (Denver time, 10:30 KU time). Nancy Latanision and Eileen Kern (adjuncts) are with me. Nancy is the current president of PA School Librarians’ Association and is attending in that capacity. Eileen is on the national task force that is studying the librarian’s role in teaching reading strategies and engaging students in recreational reading. We will all be very busy in Denver. On the flight we discussed and worked on schedules. I also caught up on reading for my Children’s Lit class (Angelfish by Laurence Yep).
